2011: The Year That Was

This year we had Tracey guiding us through the Royal wedding, a return to the London stage after a 20 year absence in the West End's "My City". She was nominated for a London Evening Standard Theatre award for her role as headmaster, Elizabeth Lambert. We even had a performance of "The Merry Wives of Windsor" at the The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles benefit! We also saw Tracey lending her support for the Labour Party in the UK.

Sadly, Tracey Ullman's Tracey Ullman's State of the Union, along with each season of Tracey Takes On... are no longer available for instant streaming on sites like Amazon.com and iTunes. Why this is, we're not sure. The message issued by the sites chalks up the removal to a liscening agreement. Whether this will be rectified in the near future, we'll let you know. You can still find both shows on DVD, (although series 3 and 4 of Tracey Takes On... are seriously butchered).

Onto much happier news, Tracey's birthday is coming up - December 30th to be exact. Feel free to wish her a Happy Birthday! We hope she has a great one!!

Of all the genres within the comedy portfolio, sketch is by far the most difficult. Unlike narrative, whose frequent pauses are merely momentary, when a sketch lands soft, it gouges a deep chasm. Even the legendary French and Saunders, with all due respect, probably only had a 50-50 hit rate with their sketch series.
Tracey Ullman comes off a high base – her earlier HBO sketch series Tracey Takes On . . . was frequently brilliant and created characters, including Fern Rosenthal, Linda Granger and Ruby Romaine, whose punchlines and mannerisms still resonate.

State of the Union, a sort of Americanised Little Britain, carves a slice of American life with mixed results. Some sketches work, some don't.

As usual, it is Ullman's almost peerless ability to mimic that stands out. Her brilliant takes on commentator Arianna Huffington, journalist Campbell Brown, Susan Boyle, Kate Winslet, Christiane Amanpour and Candy Spelling steal the show.

Emmy Award-winning actress and comedian Tracey Ullman began the tribute, stating, "I'm here to talk about my friend Meryl Streep – which is a great honor, but not easy. I was with my daughter Mabel a couple of weeks ago, who has known Meryl all her life, and I asked her what she thought I should say. 'Hmm,' she said. 'It's getting harder and harder, Mum, I mean, what hasn't been said?' And this is true because it's obvious that Meryl is brilliant, the actress of her generation, the cream of the crop; she's strong, tenacious, a champion of women worldwide…"
Ullman continued, "I could talk about how brilliant she is as Margaret Thatcher in her latest film, 'Iron Lady,' and how amazed I was to see the girl from Jersey becoming the girl from Grantham. I mean, only Meryl could give such a compassionate portrayal of a woman I raged against in the '80s… 'You need an angle, Mum,' Mabel said. There was a long pause and then she looked at me with a furrowed brow and said, 'Is there anything Meryl's bad at?' Well, we tried to think of something, and we couldn't! She can sing, dance, cook – cooks like Julia Child, in fact… and if she was bad at something she would practice like crazy in private so that she would be more brilliant at it than anyone else in the world. We even have secret footage of her in bed at six in the morning learning to speak Chinese! I'm not saying how we got it... so I am officially in awe of you, dear friend; you try harder, give more and remain as humble as anyone I know. Tracey was rehearsing earlier today at the Kennedy Center along with actors Kevin Kline, and Glenn Close, two stars Tracey has worked with in the past.

Honorees this year include Tracey's close friend, Meryl Streep, Neil Diamond, and Yo-Yo Ma.

The ceremony takes place tonight, Sunday, December 4, 2011, but won't be broadcast until December 27, 2011, on CBS at 9PM in the United States. We should have known something was up due to reports of Tracey sightings in Washington DC this past week.

French and Saunders Discuss Tracey Today!

Comediennes, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders have been presenting their own radio series on BBC Radio 2 for roughly a year now to great success. Today, a new show was presented. A typical show features Dawn and Jennifer playing their favorite records, their witty banter, and guests who join them in the studio. Tracey's 1983 hit song "Breakaway" was chosen by the hosts and was followed by comments regarding working with Tracey in "Girls On Top". To our recollection, it was the first time Jennifer spoke publicly about Tracey. Dawn French has stayed in touched with Tracey over the years. Tracey took part in Dawn's BBC documentary series, "Girls Who Do Comedy" in 2006. Tracey introduced Dawn to her now former husband, Lenny Henry, whom she worked with in the show "Three Of A Kind".

That's the millet dish, and she employed it so many times over the years for Streep's vegetarian friends, it became her signature dish. A vegetarian main dish or a side dish for a main meal, it is both showy and comforting. Temple recalled devising it for Streep's friend, comedian Tracey Ullman.

"She's a vegetarian," Temple said. "She'd come over, and I was so tired of doing the black beans and rice thing for her. I basically put two different soufflés together—a spinach soufflé and then I mixed in a grain and vegetables, and it became a main course vegetarian entrée. And everyone loves the sauce. People always want more sauce!"

A look back: Tracey Ullman's hit with the Paul McCartney surprise

Tracey Ullman is known for her work mainly as an actress on stage and TV. And her "The Tracey Ullman Show" help give "The Simpsons" their start as they first appeared on her show.

But before TV, Ullman tried a career as a singer in the early '80s. Her sound had a real retro influence with elements of Phil Spector and all sorts of girl groups, plus a dash of the comedy she'd be known for later. She did covers of hits, including "Bobby's Girl," the 1962 song first done by Marcie Blaine, and "Life Is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)," originally sung by Reunion.

But some of her other songs had great titles, like "You Broke My Heart in 17 Places" (also the title of her album) and "I'm Always Touched by Your Presence Dear."

But it was "They Don't Know," written by Kirsty MacColl, that got a ton of attention. For one, it was a great song. Ullman took the girl group sound to the limit here with echo. She even got MacColl to do backing vocals on it.

The video, however, was the crown jewel. Ullman put on a wonderful comic performance as a beleagured woman with a child and a male chauvinist mate. The big surprise in the final few seconds made it a keeper. You can see it at the left. The song reached no. 2 in the UK and the top 10 in the States.

It may have been a return favor because Tracey had a role in Paul McCartney's "Give My Regards to Broad Street," but it certainly stands on its own. And makes us smile every time we see it.

"They Don't Know" help make us a fan of Ullman's singing forever. There are CD collections of her singing available. They're well worth getting.

Whatever Happened To The Third Season "State of the Union" DVDs?!

We tried posting this a few weeks ago, but somehow it got lost.

As many have noticed, the third season of "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union" DVDs have failed to materialize. As previously reported, the set would only be made available via Amazon.com, regardless of what the press release officially stated.

The DVDs were to be produced via Amazon's Create Space on-demand service. The release date was suppose to be July 19, 2011.

We contacted Eagle Rock, the company behind the production of the discs, as well as all Tracey-related DVDs now, and we were told that the DVDs were going through Amazon's "approval process" at the moment. They aren't canceled.

We'd like to remind you that the entire third season is available via Amazon.com's streaming web service, in HD and Standard video right now. However, no extras are provided. These are to be housed on the DVD set. We'll update you if there are any changes (or if the DVDs suddenly appear).

Tracey Ullman's daughter joins Ken's team in push for City Hall

Tracey Ullman's daughter is part of the team unveiled today by Ken Livingstone for the mayoral battle against Boris Johnson next year.

Among the 25 Labour Assembly candidates bidding for seats in City Hall in May next year is 25-year-old Mabel McKeown.

She was born in Los Angeles but moved to Britain when she was young with her mother and father Allan McKeown.

Speaking at the official launch, Ms McKeown said: "My whole family is from London - I'm very rooted in this city. I'm excited to be part of Ken Livingstone's campaign." She went to school in Dorset and studied politics at Leeds University and is one of the youngest Assembly candidates.

No laughing matter: the daughter of comedian Tracey Ullman was today unveiled by Ken Livingstone as one of his team to contest the London Assembly elections

Ms McKeown is one of Harriet Harman's top advisers and will continue to work for her until the election.

Her mother appeared in UK sitcoms before moving to America in the Eighties and starring in the Tracey Ullman Show. It gave The Simpsons its TV debut for which she is said to still receive royalties.

In 2006 it was reported that Ullman's total wealth was around £75million. Neil Kinnock once appeared in one of Ullman's pop videos.

Ms McKeown said: "I've always been an active campaigner. I stood in a council by-election in Kensington and Chelsea and came extremely close." Other Labour candidates standing for the £54,000-a-year posts include Assembly members Val Shawcross and Joanne McCartney. Mr Livingstone said: "We have a fantastic team here.

"In contrast to the Tories who look like they are in a meeting of some old City club, our team looks like London." Mr Livingstone once again attacked the Mayor over cuts to the number of sergeants on the Safer Neighbourhood Teams from 630 to 330. Some sergeants will have to re-apply for their jobs.

He said: "Police officers should be spending their time on the streets catching criminals, not filling in application forms for their jobs." Deputy Mayor Kit Malthouse insisted: "The purpose of this redeployment is to strengthen the number of officers we see on the streets."

The DVD for season 3 of "State of the Union" still due to be released on July 19, 2011, will only be available via Amazon.com through their CreateSpace service. Many networks have been using this service (Nickelodeon, MTV, Lifetime) which is a DVD print-on-demand service. DVDs are pressed upon purchase. They're not mass produced beforehand.

Season 3 is already available via Amazon Instant Video, Amazon.com's streaming service.

Arianna Huffington has been a gift to me, I love to impersonate her , she even lets me do it to her face without flinching. She once said that people liked me being her more than they liked her being her.

She sounds like Eva Gabor from Green Acres - there's one to to check out on You Tube if you didn't watch TV after school in the late 60s - Arianna is actually Greek and she has the soft Athenian lilt of a Goddess, but don't be fooled, underneath she's a gladiator.

Arianna lives round the corner from me on the West side of Los Angeles and a few years ago she started inviting me to parties where people would talk about things other than show business, it was a relief. One evening she said she was going to start the Huffington Post and that everyone must blog.

The way Arianna says blog is delicious - it's like ' blaaahg' . "Time to blaaahg!" She would say when I hiked with her in the Santa Monica mountains with her sister Agape, who sounds like Eva's sister Zsa Zsa as Duchess in The Aristocats. "Dahling, when are you going to post your blaaag?" She would shout from a car window as she whizzed by you on Sunset Boulevard.

If you mentioned that you were disturbed about the money spent on US elections, or the problems in the Middle East she would tell you to "Blaahg about it immediately!" "But what if I sound like a champagne socialist who has the luxury of spare time to analyse global problems and people ridicule me?" "Well Blaaahg about that then!"

That was the Huff Post's agenda from the beginning and it has gone on to let as many people from as many walks of life possible have a voice . Politicians, scientists, teachers, and of course the inevitable "life style gurus" and celebrity fashion critics rating Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jordan's "beach bods" is a necessary evil if you want to build an online viewing empire.

And now after being acquired by AOL, that is part of what the Huff Post has become. But she did it! This woman blaaaged her way from Brentwood onto the world stage, and I admire her for it.

We should give her control of Greece right now, they've got nothing to lose at this point. But as for the UK - Arianna, I know you say you feel at home here, having gone to Cambridge and dated Bernard Levin and all, but If you think you get flack in the USA at times, its nothing to what the Brits will hurl at you - in our sarcastic, superior, albeit adorable way.

So keep being thick-skinned and indomitable, you're going to need it. Personally, I look forward to seeing you spar with Jeremy Paxman, and stir up the News Corp ranks to start a rival page.

Traditional journalists have already been grumbling about some unpaid Huff Posters who will be taking away their livelihood, and I know it's awful, but get used to it. Look what happened to us luvvies when all those reality show stars came on the scene. It was painful to realise that the public would rather see these people have sex on infra red cameras and get their haemorrhoids cauterized in HD, than watch us display our craft in classics such as Bergerac, London's Burning and the late great Casualty.

The Huff Post does pay lots of folk, although I never seem to see anyone but Arianna in her home office, wearing three headsets, saying things like "I'm on a conference with Geffen and Bill Gates, but I can tweet with Angela Merkel if someone throws me my third Blackberry." She's a can do gal is Arianna and she wants a piece of the UK action - gone are the days when the likes of Lord Beaverbrook and Viscount Harmsworth controlled the media.

When King George V died, his time of death was withheld so that the The Times could break the news rather than the late monarch suffering the indignity of having the evening papers run the story. Can you imagine if a rogue chamber maid had blogged back then "They're telling porkies, he's been cold for bleedin hours!"

So let's welcome The Huffington Post, and the conversation it inspires. I'm sure it will discover many new original voices in this extraordinary country and I take pleasure in impersonating them all, so if you need an interpretor, Arianna, let me know - or even a stand-in if you can't make an appearance in Skelmersdale in mid-January - but I warn you in advance, I'll be charging for that.

Complete Casting Announced for Almeida Theatre's 'My City', Starring Tracey Ullman

The British-born television comedienne and writer Tracey Ullman, who has long been resident in the U.S., will return to the London stage to star in the world premiere of Stephen Poliakoff's My City, beginning performances at London's Almeida Theatre Sept. 8, prior to an official opening Sept. 15, for a run through Nov. 5.

Ullman will play the character of Lambert. Other members of the cast include Hannah Arterton as Waitress, Sîan Brooke as Julie, Sorcha Cusack as Summers, Tom Riley as Richard and David Troughton as Minken.

According to press materials, My City "asks how would you feel if, 15 years after you last saw them, you bumped into the one person who had the biggest influence on your life? On a dusky evening, Richard Kenton finds his primary school headmistress lying on a park bench in the shadow of St Paul's Cathedral. As he becomes reacquainted with her and the other teachers that helped shape him, memories of their vivid and imaginative lessons come to life and their tales of London inspire him once more."

Ullman, who has previously appeared onstage in the short-lived 1991 Broadway run of the solo play The Big Love, is best known for creating her own U.S. network series "The Tracey Ullman Show," followed by "Tracey Takes On…." and "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union."

Poliakoff, who will also direct his own play, began his career in the theatre and won the Evening Standard Most Promising Playwright in 1976 for Hitting Town and City Sugar, has written over 20 plays, including Breaking the Silence (premiered by the RSC) and Coming In To Land (premiered at the National). His film and TV credits include "Hidden City," "Caught on a Train," "Close My Eyes," "Perfect Strangers" and most recently "Glorious 39."

Designs for The City are by Lez Brotherson with lighting by Oliver Fenwick and sound and music by Ben and Max Ringham.

The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles has long had a knack for lining up marquee names for its annual Simply Shakespeare benefit readings of the Bard's plays.
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the center has assembled what Ben Donenberg, founder and executive artistic director, calls "one of our starriest and most adventurous casts ever." Christina Applegate, Kenneth Branagh, Faith Hill, Eric Idle, Arte Johnson, Eugene Levy, Tim McGraw, William Shatner, Martin Short, Tracey Ullman and event co-chairs Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks are set to perform "The Merry Wives of Windsor" on May 9 at UCLA's Royce Hall.
Donenberg, the evening's director, says the reading will have "a kind of country-western theme," including musicians playing and singing Hank Williams songs. "We try to make things fun and user-friendly for the audience," he said. "The actors are at liberty to improvise. This is impromptu and unplugged."
The chance to do Shakespeare in a relaxed setting with high-caliber casts keeps attracting well-known performers to the benefits, which are now in their 21st year. "Most of the people involved this time have participated before," said Donenberg. "And the others have attended."
The center is offering a small speaking role to the high bidder in an EBay auction that will run April 21 to May 1. The winner also will receive perks including an invitation to the post-show party and billing in the program.
Proceeds from the event and auction will go the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles and its youth employment, education and community-outreach efforts.
"The Merry Wives of Windsor" will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets, which cost $95 and $175, will go on sale Friday, April 15, at uclalive.com and through Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000. Tracey's Returning To London Stage!!!

Tracey Ullman has been persuaded to return to the London stage for the first time in more than 20 years.

The actress has lived in California for two decades, but yesterday said she was ‘thrilled’ to have been offered the chance to work with Stephen Poliakoff on his new play My City, which begins rehearsing in August at the Almeida Theatre.

Tracey, 51, will play a former primary school headmistress in the drama, which Poliakoff described as ‘high octane’.

The pair got together to discuss the project recently. ‘We met in London because we both had to approve of each other,’ Poliakoff joked.

Once upon a time, London was Tracey’s city. She appeared in musicals, but her name was made at the Royal Court in a comic show called Four In A Million and later on in Andrea Dunbar’s Rita, Sue And Bob Too, in a cast that included Lesley Manville and Joanne Whalley. Her TV career included Three Of A Kind with Lenny Henry and David Copperfield.

Poliakoff told me Tracey will be part of an ensemble when My City begins performances at the Almeida from September 8.

The playwright added: ‘It’s not the Tracey Ullman Show. It’ll surprise people.

Everyone’s on stage for most of the time.’ He said he knew Tracey’s early work at the Royal Court and had kept an eye on her progress in America, mostly on television (The Simpsons began life in 1987 as short clips on her show) and sometimes on stage with her one-woman shows, although she did appear in Taming Of The Shrew opposite Morgan Freeman back in 1991.

Poliakoff explained the headmistress encounters two former pupils whom she helped when they were young.

‘The character is a very proficient story teller and that plays very strongly to Tracey’s talent for buttonholing us,’ he said, adding the part is a straight role, although there would be ‘one or two mercurial, edgy, hopefully funny moments in it’. He stressed that it’s not a drama about schools, rather it’s about London, modern life and a collision between two generations.

However, he noted that it’s also about people who have worked in public service all their lives which, he observed, ‘is political at the moment’.

Poliakoff began his career writing for the stage, but then made several TV dramas and films including Hidden City, The Lost Prince, Caught On A Train and last year’s Glorious 39.

While preparing to direct My City, Poliakoff is also working on a five-part drama for the BBC called Dancing On The Edge, about a black jazz band playing at a five-star hotel in London between 1931-33.

And he’s also writing a movie for Ruby Films, the company behind Toast (with Helena Bonham Carter) and the forthcoming Jane Eyre film.

Last week, the Almeida had more than 30 per cent of its Arts Council funding chopped, with the assumption being that because it attracts high-profile actors and writers and has a strong fund-raising arm, it can do without public subsidy.

‘It’s being punished for its success, but it’s going to be hard for the Almeida in this climate,’ Poliakoff said sadly.

Tracey has also just signed to comment on the Royal wedding for Canadian television.

Comedy has long been a boy's club because for a long time, women being funny was considered more inappropriate, disrespectful or even threatening. My, how times have changed. Tracey's HuffPo Op-Ed: I'm Every Woman, and a Few Men, Too

I'm a really lucky girl, and I know it. I have grown up in the greatest generation yet to be a woman. I received an education, I can vote, I had the freedom to choose if I wanted to give birth to a child, and epidurals when I did. I've said what I wanted, gone where I wanted. I never felt inferior to a man. I didn't play the coquette or feel any pressure to hold back amongst groups of men, and that carried through in my professional life as an actress, too.

I've had an interesting career doing my own thing, not being stereotyped; I've played every type of woman and some men, too... It's been fascinating to put myself into different bodies, mentally and physically, and see people's reactions. You get treated a lot differently by the male members of the crew if you dress as a giggly busty blonde in tight jeans than you do as a pear-shaped spinster in polyester pants. Strange that. Some characters I have played garnered equal respect from men and women alike. When I crossed the studio floor as former first lady Laura Bush, a burly electrician whispered in my ear, "I didn't vote for your husband Laura, but I have tremendous respect for you, you're one classy lady!" And I smiled my beautiful Texas smile and twinkled my blue, contact-lensed eyes as he captured our image on his cell phone.

One of my only experiences of being treated unfairly because of my sex was on a trip to Israel a few years ago when my son and I visited the wailing wall in Jerusalem, and I wasn't allowed to walk up to the main part, I had to go into the "women's section," which was crowded and a quarter the size of the men's. I was furious! I wanted to stand beside Johnny and put a prayer in the wall with the boys. And that for me was just a tiny taste of the injustice meted out to millions of women all over the world on a daily basis. It reminded me that those of us who have a voice have to keep speaking up for those that don't.

Today, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day -- where would I have been 100 years ago? Working below stairs polishing the master's silver or in a whalebone corset about to appear in a vaudeville act on the Titanic, perhaps.

We've come a long way, and there's a really long way to go. I do hope I see a female president in my lifetime. We need more female politicians generally, more women CEOs, and in the world of showbiz, more interesting film roles for women over 40 -- Meryl cant play both parts.

And let's age with dignity, ladies. The majority of surgeons who nip tuck and drag female features into a scary version of their former selves are men, and how do they know how women should look and feel?

And of course one thing men will never be able to feel, is the "kick inside" of a baby -- it's magical, and it's been the best thing of all about being a woman for me. So here's to my brilliant daughter's generation -- it's so exciting to watch you.

We need Tracey Ullman back. Desperately. That was obvious to me after seeing the YouTube video of Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro run through the sarcastic grinder of “Late Night With David Letterman” on Friday night.

It’s not Ullman’s last premium cable show, “State of the Union,” we desperately need back— although that wouldn’t be all that bad either, especially if it put her back on the talk show circuit to slap some sense into some hosts who have locked themselves into tedious formulas.

Ullman isn’t merely fondly remembered, she’s cherished by some of us for the memory of her on Letterman’s old 12:30 a. m. NBC show—the one with the infamous Green Room—as she sat down smirking and sneering at the host “DAV-id LETTer- man. DAV-ID LETT-ER-MAN.”

Right after her initial swipe at his self-importance (adapted later by Don King), she would then spend the rest of the “interview” slapping the host around as if he were some nasty little younger brother caught rooting through her underwear drawer. The spectacle of Letterman taking verbal abuse from Tracey Ullman was one of the triumphs of that show.

It reminded you that Letterman, in fact, grew up in a house full of sisters. And was involved at the time with Merrill Markoe, one of his show’s formative writers and the instigator of a lot of its conceptual comic tone.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m nothing if not loyal to the evolved CBS Letterman. But there’s so much rust on the wheels these days, it sometimes barely moves at all. We need Tracey Ullman back to give HIM a taste of what it’s like to endure a couple of segments of stooge work while another brilliant comic mind gets all the big laughs at his expense.

Everyone knows the post-Carson system of guest-hyping on talk shows: celebrity X, Y or Z has a new movie or disc coming out and needs some publicity. So they go on Letterman or Leno or Kimmel or Conan or George Lopez or whatever.

If it’s Cher, who needs to put fannies back in seats for the unexciting release of “Burlesque,” she’ll go on Letterman after a very long absence and let the host do a bedcheck list on her sexual history (Tom Cruise? Yup. Eric Clapton? Yup. Elvis. Almost. But she should have, she now says).

If Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro have a “Fockers” movie to infect the American megaplex Wednesday (see the review in Thursday’s paper), they’ll go on Letterman together even though it is near-universally known that Robert De Niro, by himself, is, among other things, the Bermuda Triangle of publicity interviews—a man so contemptuous of the severely formalized rituals of jocularity and dumb-jerk questions of most hype-talk that he comes on like a not-so-secretly exasperated Vito Corleone forced to endure a lunch meeting with David Spade.

On the other hand, if you’re in the “Focker” film business, that is the business you’re in, so you can forget any pretense at all of selling Genco Olive Oil.

Much better, of course, for a slumming publicity tour by De Niro is hosting “Saturday Night Live,” where he can trash all seriousness in skits.

On Letterman, he needed the wildly cheery and entertaining Hoffman — who’s as open and masterful at publicity interviews as De Niro is solemn, obdurate and impossible — but even so, the whole entertaining segment turned into Letterman taking his chances to tee off on De Niro, just as he had on Joaquin Phoenix during his alienated, bearded rapper act for the movie “I’m Still Here.” (The act revealed more about Phoenix’s true nature than any fatuous talk show jibber-jabber ever could.)

And that, I submit, is why it would be a Christmas present to us all if Tracey Ullman would take her vitamins and get back into shape and come back on the talk show circuit to start abusing some hosts who are getting fat and happy and content with easy interviews that sometimes skirt the heights of banality.

But then, according to the Internet, journalists in Ullman’s native England have reported that Ullman and her husband have a fortune somewhere between eight and nine figures between them.

So maybe she’s perfectly happy to be doing her sneering, smirking, snorting and chortling in the privacy of her own home. I’d sure like to hear it sometime, though.

One of this country’s cherished ideals is that anyone can grow up to be president. “I couldn’t grow up to be a member of the royal family, and that always rankled me,” said British-born comedienne Tracey Ullman at Monticello on July 4. Ullman became a U.S. citizen in 2006 after living in the country 25 years.

The perception of Americans abroad, said Ullman, is one of “white teeth and confidence.” She reminded the 71 newly sworn-in citizens that they’re earned the right to be Americans and exhorted them to go forth with confidence.

'Never forget where you are from,' Ullman tells new citizens

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Swearing away allegiance to "any foreign prince, potentate state or sovereign," 71 people from 31 countries became Americans at Monticello yesterday morning.

"Never forget where you are from," said keynote speaker Tracey Ullman. "You're not supposed to."

Ullman, the comedian and actress, is herself a naturalized citizen, having been born in Slough, England.

She recalled the terrifying promise that America offered.

"America seemed to say, 'You want it? Come and get it. But you're on your own,'" she said.

Growing up in England, she remembered thinking of Americans as people with "white teeth and confidence."

Ullman had lived and worked in America for years before she took the final step of becoming a citizen. (She jokingly described her career: "And let's face it: If I hadn't headed west and created 'The 'Tracey Ullman Show,' 'The Simpsons' might never have existed.")

"I'd become an American minus the paperwork," said Ullman, whose TV show featured the debut of the Matt Groening cartoon.

After the ceremony, Ullman said having the paperwork out of the way did change the way she viewed herself and her adopted country.

"Old cynic that I am, you really belong," she said.

Yesterday was Juan Esteves Dao's chance to belong.

The 2005 University of Virginia graduate and Charlottesville resident has an attachment to Thomas Jefferson, he said.

"I was a tour guide at U.Va.," the Venezuela native said. "And, as all tour guides at U.Va., I was obsessed with Thomas Jefferson."

He said, "Being able to be here on his property on July Fourth is so incredible."

The ceremony was the 48th at Jefferson's mountaintop home. It featured an earlier start time, 9 a.m., to beat the summer heat, and a new opening -- the ringing of Jefferson's gong, said Leslie Greene Bowman, president of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which owns and operates Monticello.

Mentioned by two speakers was Jefferson's owning of slaves, even as he wrote that "all men are created equal."

Bowman said Jefferson had "the courage to put in pen what he couldn't live in life." Ullman imagined herself asking the president questions, ending with one about his owning slaves. "That's a tricky one, that," she pictured him saying, before shooing her to the garden.

The new citizens were also urged to strongly participate in their new country.

"Jefferson's vision for those words was more than the American Revolution which ensued," Bowman said.

Some of the inductees who spoke also addressed America's government.

"I have come to appreciate what a truly remarkable system of government the Founding Fathers left us," said Rich Keffert, a native of Sussex, England, who has lived in America for 21 years.

Speakers noticed that the ceremony was being conducted with both sun and moon in the sky.

"My grandfather always used to say that when the moon is face down, it's pouring good fortune on all those below," remarked Chief Judge Glen E. Conrad of the U.S. District Court for Western Virginia, who oversaw the swearing in.

Confidence, Tracey Ullman said. That's what Americans exude. She learned this watching the telly during her childhood in a small English village, and she exhorted the 71 naturalized citizens assembled atop Jefferson's mountain this morning to believe in themselves and, as new Americans, to exude some confidence of their own. The comedic actress and Emmy winner (seven times, as she good-naturedly pointed out to Monticello board chair Alice W. Handy, who, in her introduction, robbed Ullman of one statuette) was the keynote speaker for the 48th annual naturalization ceremony at Monticello. As has been tradition, the 70-minute event took place under a beating sun and before a full audience of flag-waving patriots and friends.

Ullman became a naturalized American in 2006, she said, because "I realized how much I loved this country" and because she wanted to vote. She recounted her first look at the New York skyline and how inspired she became after intensive study at the Museum of Broadcasting by comediennes like Lucille Ball, Carol Burnet and Gracie Allen—all women, she pointed out, who had their own TV shows.

And while her comments highlighted the affection for the U.S. that should be evident to anyone who has watched her on her own television shows over the past two decades, she allowed as to how "it's now perfect here."

"It can be puritanical and extreme," she said, adding that with a national penchant for over-analyzing, "it's like the whole nation is in perpetual group therapy."

Ullman revealed that, given the auspiciousness of the occasion and the mighty setting for the event, she wondered if she were worthy of the honor bestowed on her to address the new citizens. But then she counseled herself to be confident. She's earned it, she said, pointing to her achievement in introducing Americans to Bart and Homer Simpson, who debuted on her Fox program "The Tracey Ullman Show" in 1987. "I have made an indelible mark on the cultural heritage of this land," she announced—a declaration that earned more than a few salutes from amongst the crowd.

At the 48th annual Independence Day naturalization ceremony at Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello on July 4, the featured speaker was actress and comedienne Tracey Ullman, who has won seven Emmy Awards® for her work in television. Her self-named Fox-TV show of the 1980s introduced the world interstitially to The Simpsons.

Ullman is a dual British-American citizen. Born and raised in Slough, England, she has lived and worked in the United States for 25 years and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2006.

In her remarks to the 71 immigrants from more than two dozen countries (from Afghanistan and Armenia to Uzbekistan and Vietnam), Ullman emphasized how her early impressions of America were those of “confidence,” that the American attitude was one of “if you want it, come and get it.”

After the ceremony, Ullman sat down for a one-on-one interview with the Charlottesville Libertarian Examiner, answering questions about citizenship, the American dream, and what she finds valuable in the American founding.

Subjects and Citizens
Noting that it was recently revealed that, in his draft of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote the word “subjects” and smudged it out so he could replace it with “citizens,” Ullman talked about the difference between “subject” and “citizen,” because she has been both.

She said she was pleased to learn about Jefferson’s editing, that “he changed it, that he moved on, that he made the change.”

“Yes,” she said, “I have been a subject and now a citizen and it’s interesting. I just think that we are equal. There’s no one better than us. We’re not paying people millions of pounds to be better than us,” as the British pay their royal family.

“I’ve never been a royalist,” Ullman explained, “and that [equality] is something that really appealed to me about America.”

Image of Confidence
When she was growing up as a girl in England, Ullman absorbed many images of America that she saw on television. What most impressed her, she said, “was the Olympics,” not only because American athletes won so many gold medals, but “it was the confidence,” they exhibited.

In addition, she said, “it was that ‘you can be anyone you want to be’” attitude and “kindness,” as well as “inspirational people like Lily Tomlin. I impersonated her at my school when I was like 10. I said, ‘I want to be Lily Tomlin. I want to be Gilda Radner.’”

Ullman joked that “our images of America were like Dallas, when I was a kid, like soap operas and things” but even so, when she first arrived in the United States at the age of 20, she was “very inspired.”

Citizenship Test
Since Ullman so recently went through the naturalization process, she spoke about the most surprising things she learned as she prepared for the citizenship test.

One was, she laughed, a question about two forms used by the immigration authorities, the N-200 and the N-400. That’s “a real question,” she said, and applicants had to know the difference between those forms. “I think they’ve dropped that one now, it’s a little obscure.”

She was most impressed, however, by the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence, which is why, she said, it is so inspiring “to be here, where Thomas Jefferson” lived. He was “so forward thinking,” for his time, Ullman remarked, and that is why she remembers “really being impressed with the words of the Founding Fathers, in particular Thomas Jefferson, who was just so enlightened and so brave and so incredible at that time and still holds up” today.

Monticello has announced that comedienne Tracey Ullman will be the featured speaker at its annual naturalization ceremony on July 4. Those hoping for her dead-on impersonation of Arianna Huffington, David Beckham or Rachel Maddow, will likely have to wait. Ullman became a naturalized citizen in 2006, in order to be able to vote, after 25 years of living in the United States. Expect in her speech something lively, affectionate, and comparatively straightforward.

As Monticello’s speaker, on a day that will see scores of new Americans take the oath of citizenship, Ullman joins a long list of naturalization ceremony speakers from the arts and politics. They include Madeleine Albright, Andrew Young, I.M. Pei, and, two years ago to mild protest, President George W. Bush.

Since 1963, more than 3,000 people from all over the world have been sworn in as new American citizens at Monticello. The morning event is free and open to the public.

Even though Tracey Ullman's Showtime variety program "State of the Union" doesn't compete for best comedy series, its star might nonetheless be nominated for, and win, best comedy actress at the upcoming Emmys.

It's one of the quirky results of the TV academy tinkering with categories. Last year, when the Emmys squashed a category that Tracey Ullman had won twice (1990, '94) — best performance in the variety program — its contenders were pushed into either the guest or supporting races for comedy acting. Ullman was defined as a supporting comedy star. That's a laugh, of course, since she doesn't support anyone on "State of the Union," so now she's been reclassified as a contender for comedy actress this year.

Since the Emmys have six nominees per category instead of five, that increases Ullman's chance to get in, which isn't a far-fetched possibility. She's a longtime Emmy darling. She's been nominated 24 times for producing, writing and performing in her variety TV shows at Fox and HBO before arriving at Showtime, plus acting in guest roles on sitcoms. She's won guest comedy actress twice ("Ally McBeal" in 1999, "Love and War" in 1993) and variety program twice (1989, 1997). Add an Emmy for writing (1990) plus the two aforementioned trophies for variety performances, and her tally of Emmy victories comes to an impressive seven.

If Ullman breaks into the race for comedy actress, she could be battling many network rivals. It's possible that Showtime could have four of the six nominations. The other three: Edie Falco ("Nurse Jackie"), Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds") and last year's winner, Toni Collette ("United States of Tara").

"It's really an embarrassment of comedic riches having these four women vying for the same statuette," Showtime PR chief Richard Licata tells Gold Derby. "Each of them brings something very unique and wonderful to the category. Edie’s acerbic, captivating Jackie, master of the double life, Toni Collette's five-character tour-de-force, Mary Louise Parker's turn of ballsy humor and confrontation, and Tracey's take-no-prisoners look at America."

after three great years, working on our STATE of the UNION , we think that the series has run its course. Its been really exciting and great fun. the first years reviews and our Emmy winners Sally and Matthew. A solid year two and then we had the pleasure of year three with us directing. Oliver Stone and author Bruce Wagner have cut a deal with pay cabler Epix to develop a drama skein set in Los Angeles.

Project, dubbed "Still Holding," will explore the disparate worlds of three people living in L.A. It's based on Wagner's novel of the same name. Wagner most recently was a writer and producer on Tracey Ullman's Showtime series "State of the Union."

There's still no word yet from Epix on a series greenlight for its first original drama pilot, "Tough Trade," revolving around a musical family dynasty in Nashville.

I have a great suggestion for a new American Idol judge: Tracey Ullman. She knows music, she's judgmental, she's funny. The present panel is pretty lame. The poor kids are told to put their own spins on songs, and when they do, they judges carp at them for changing songs too much. Ellen is great on her own show and lousy on Idol. Simon doesn't even know what "cabaret" is. Randy and Kara are not dope. ( Ryan Seacrest is infuriating as Idol host, but he was terrific at interviewing celebs on Sunday's E! pre-Oscars show.)
